Being an generalist elementary classroom teacher can undoubtedly be overwhelming. It is difficult and next to impossible to be an expert in every subject area. As individuals we each have our specific passion and in my experiences, most passions lie in the area of literacy rather than numeracy. And with this said, it is human tendency to put more time and energy into our passion.
Just as older students will fall back to counting on fingers to add and subtract without strategies and avenues of understanding, so will teachers fall back to teaching mathematics the traditional way in which students memorize rules and algorithms, without a deep understanding of ´how’ to deliver curriculum for students to gain conceptual understanding and procedural fluency and knowledge.
The intent of this course is to help teachers did deep into ALL that makes up the EMBODIMENT of mathematics. Through reflection of your own learning and understanding and the learning and understanding of your students you will become equipped to quickly identify what your students are needing and act in the moment, knowing how to redirect, knowing what questions to ask, knowing what scaffolding to implement, knowing if targetting or challenging is necessary.
Just at it takes time for students to develop a deep understanding of concepts so will it take time for teachers to develop the ability to teach mathematics for a conceptual understanding and procedural fluency and knowledge. Often we need to move slow to be fast.
This course will take a minimum of 2-3 months. It may even take 3-4 months, but I truly believe at the end of this course you will not only gain confidence in your ability to teach mathematics, you will have gained an incredible amount of knowledge and skill; and will be undoubtedly more equipped, inspired, motivated and passionate to teach mathematics! Just think of the tremendous benefit this will be to your students!
